Lance Corporal Thomas Waring

A man in glider n°3

Thomas, a Lance Corporal during the D-Day landings, served in the Royal Engineers detachment attached to the Ox and Bucks. During Operation Deadstick, he was aboard glider No. 3, tasked with neutralizing any explosive charges on the Bénouville Bridge.

About an hour and a half after the bridge was secured, Thomas and his comrades intercepted a German staff car sent to investigate. They neutralized the vehicle and its occupants and recovered a camera, with which Thomas later took several photographs, including one showing all three gliders.

Thomas remained in the Ranville area until the end of August before returning to Great Britain.
